Why zucchini flowers falling off
This year, my daughter-in-law tells me that she has plenty of tiny zucchini, but they die off before getting very big. Can you offer us suggestions? A: I'd bet on pollination problems. Squash plants like zucchini depend primarily on bees to transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers. If the female blossoms are poorly pollinated or not pollinated at all, the blossoms drop off and you get no fruits. Sometimes, young fruits will start to grow, but if the pollination was poor and the young fruits aren't developing seeds, the plant aborts the fruit.
The latter is nature's way of not wasting energy on something that isn't going to "pay off" for the plant.
To a zucchini plant, the point of producing fruit isn't to give us something to grill but to create seeds to keep the species thriving. Lack of bees has been a big problem for farmers lately, but it also affects home gardeners. Your email address will not be published. I know that with the terracotta floor it'll be gorgeous but the kids throw themselves on all our outdoor furniture with wet swimsuits and mucky feet -- no matter how many times I tell them off!
They usually swear that they aren't that wet anyway, nearly dry, etc etc -- and then end up leaving a wet stain. So water your Zucchini plant once a day in the morning to about 4 to 5 inches deep.
Once the first flowers are building adapt the amount of water you are giving the plant to about 6 to 7 inches deep. If the plant is reacting poorly then use a soil tester to check the moisture and PH of your soil in order to adapt the water amount properly. If your soil PH is too far off then your Zucchini Flowers might not bloom properly or your fruit might not form correctly. So use a soil tester to check the PH value. It should ideally be between 4. You can get a soil tester from Amazon right here or at your local garden center.
As I mentioned above, most Zucchini plants have female and male blossoms and only the female flowers will build a fruit. So the male blossoms will fall off after they were pollinated while the female flowers will build out the fruit at their base.
This means that it is absolutely normal that a few flowers, the male blossoms, fall off while other flowers, the female flowers, will build a fruit that we can later on eat. And finally, every flower on the Zucchini plant will eventually fall off after it has been pollinated even the female ones.
